じする【辞する】

1 〔辞任する〕 resign (from) 《one's post [office]》; leave [quit] 《one's position》; relinquish 《one's duties》.

●職を辞する resign one's post [position, office]; leave [go out of] office; step down (from one's post)

・議員を辞する vacate [resign] one's seat in the Diet

・理事[重役]の職を辞する resign as director; resign one's position on a board of directors.

2 〔辞去する〕 take one's leave; leave.

●田中家を辞する leave Mr. Tanaka's (house)

・この世を辞する depart from this life; pass away

・父母の膝下を辞する take leave of [say farewell to] one's parental roof.

3 〔辞退する; 断る〕 decline; excuse oneself 《from attendance》; send an apology [regrets] 《for not attending a meeting》.

●指命を辞する decline a nomination [to be nominated].

●彼は直木賞の受賞を辞した. He declined the Naoki Prize.

4 〔(以下の用例の形で)かまわない〕

●…を(も)辞さない[辞せず] do not mind [care] doing; go (to) the length of doing; be willing (even) to do; do not stop at doing

・われわれは領海が侵犯されれば戦争も辞さないという考えだ. We are ready to go to war if our territorial waters are violated.

・愛のためなら死ぬことも辞さない. I would be willing [not hesitate] to die for love.

・場合によっては死をも辞さない. Depending on circumstances, I'm ready even to die.

・国家の独立のためにはいかなる犠牲をも辞さない覚悟だ. We are prepared to make every sacrifice in the cause of national independence.
